It must stretch

for college friends

The thing they don’t tell you about college
is for a brief moment in time everyone aligns
with the same schedule
or the same book to read for class
or the same free hour every Thursday evening

And you forget about the before moments of your life
without the people you know now

You forget that a life existed without them
without their laughter in your ears
and their hearts that made yours grow
more than you knew it could

The thing they don’t tell you
is for a brief moment
the parts of your soul you were missing before
will live down the hall
or down the street
or just across town

And you selfishly wish it could stay that way forever
but it can’t
and it won’t

And in the midst of the ending
you will feel like your heart can’t grow that far
when everyone goes their separate ways

But it can
and it will

Because the thing they don’t tell you
is this little college town cannot hold
the bounty of love
and joy
and safety
and purpose
and strength
given to you from friends
you were missing in the before

So it must grow
it must stretch
and you must know
that some things cannot break
