I’ve realized in my life that I love to sugar-coat things. I love to take a bad experience that I’ve had and try to turn it into a motivational, “I got through it! You can too!” kind of message. I’ve had friends that treated me horribly, but my life turned out better on the other side! I’ve failed tests, but, by golly, I learned my lesson and did better the next time! I’ve lost competitions against a rival cheer team, but don’t worry! I was inspired to try harder when I got another chance!
But, you know what? Tonight I don’t really feel like sugar-coating what I’m feeling, and this is probably the first time in my life that I’ve felt this way.
Today I’m sad. Just sad. I can’t really pinpoint a reason, so that’ll have to be enough. Sometimes everything that you’ve been trying to handle blows up in your face all at once, and you just cry. That’s me tonight. College is difficult, I miss my dog, I feel like I’m missing out on my old life at home, I’m getting sick, I have work stress and school stress and stress about being stressed. It’s just a mountain. So, tonight, after I guessed my way through an online test, I cried. I also cried before the test. I’m still crying a little bit now. I’ll be okay though. I should probably just take a shower and hit the hay, but I wanted to get this out first:
It’s okay to not be okay every once in a while. I pray that you know that, whoever you are. It’s okay to cry, and get upset, and just wallow in tears for a little bit. Crying is healthy. It really does make you feel better. I know from personal experience, believe it or not.
Also: your feelings are valid. There are no rules that tell you what you can and can’t be upset about. If you want to cry over a B on a test, then, gosh dangit, cry over a B on a test. Don’t hide how you’re feeling. Doing that is only going to make the feeling stronger, so let it out. I promise you there is someone else, somewhere in the world, that has felt the same way you have at some point in their life. Believe me when I tell you that you’re not alone. I mean, come on, I’m over here crying about who-knows-what, and I have a feeling you’ve probably been there before too.
So feel what you want. React the way you feel like reacting. But, when you’ve packed up your emotional baggage for the day, try to regroup. That’s what I’m attempting to do now by writing this blog. Here’s just a quick little list of other things that help me after a good ol’ emotional breakdown:
- Take a shower or a bath.
- Take a nap, or if it’s nighttime just go to bed.
- Go for a drive and blast your favorite song on repeat.
- Read a book. Preferably your favorite book.
- Give someone you love at least a 5 minute hug.
- Make a list of things you can realistically accomplish before the day is over.
- Write in a journal.
- Look at the sky.
- And my all time favorite: look up quotes/bible verses on Pinterest. 99% of the time you will find something that hits home and will remind you that you’re not alone.
Ah! Lookie there! A perfect example:
It’s going to get better. No matter what it is. Tomorrow is a new day, and you’ll wake up with a clearer head and a new perspective.
If you were crying when you started reading this, I hope that you feel better and that you’ve dried your tears (luckily writing this post helped and this rings true for me). But, if the waterworks are still happening, just remember that you’re human. We all cry. We all get upset. It’s perfectly normal. You’re not crazy. Also remember that I love you, and I’m sure a lot of other people do too.
Take a deep breath. You’re going to be okay. Promise.
